Course Description

Objectives and competences

  1. 1. Awareness of the complexity of the notion culture and French culture;
  2. 2. The ability to understand the function of literary texts in the French society;
  3. 3. Recognizing the most important authors of the early French literature.
  4. 4. Discussing themes and problems of modern French society and culture.
  5. 5. Awareness of the differences and similarities between the Slovene and French society;
  6. 6. A detailed discussion of individual themes, becoming familiar with French society and culture, as well as the life and customs in order to systematically enhance vocabulary.
  7. 7. Developing linguistic and intercultural ability.

Content (syllabus outline)

The course is divided into two units:

  1. a) French Literature I
  2. b) French Society and Culture II


French literature: An overview of French literature from its beginnings until the 19th century. Students learn about the literary and historical categories of French literature and are able to place it within the context of European literature. They learn about the basic periods in French literature, as well as literary movements, authors, and their works.

French society and culture: Students learn about intercultural differences and similarities. Discussing themes and problems of modern French society and culture: traditions, education; an overview of geography; religion;  media; history of French; arts.

For their home reading students have to select at least 7 works from the reading list provided by the lecturer.


  1. Enrollment in the first year of Interlingual Communication. 


The final passing grade is the average of passing grades from both cycles. The grades from individual cycles are:

  1. -          French society and culture: exam (50 % of the final grade);
  2. -          French literature: exam, as well as reading required literature; i.e., at least 7 texts from the literature list (50 % of the final grade).

Assessment scale: 6–10 (positive) or 1–5 (negative); in line with the Statute of the University of Ljubljana and the faculty's examination rules.
