Course Description

Objectives and competences

The students develop the following:

  • competences in understanding and discourse analysis of specific English texts;
  • advanced cultural and language competences in English language and the cultures of the English-speaking world;
  • professional competences in editing and formation of texts, in keeping with the conventions of the English language;
  • the ability to theoretically analyse and comment on processes suitable for teaching and research purposes;
  • competences in the use of language resources and adequate computer and technological tools;
  • the ability to work individually and in a group and to apply the principles of professional ethics;
  • competences in spoken and written communication in English.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Students gain familiarity with the conventions of written and spoken discourse in English with regard to form, function, purpose and target audience. The course focuses on rhetorical conventions and features of specific genres. Students gain familiarity with the structure of various genres, the language used in specific genres, and compare reading/listening and writing/speaking positions. Students apply the concepts introduced to the production of texts. The course focuses on specialised genres.

Prerequisites

  1. Enrollment in the first year of the MA programme in Translation/Interpreting.

Assessment 

Final exam.

The exam covers the content of English Text Formation I and English Text Formation II.
