Course Description

Objectives and competences

  • Acquiring, developing and expanding basic conference interpreting skills and knowledge.
  • Memory training for conference interpreting.
  • Developing the capacity to summarise and synthesize.
  • Learning approaches to acquiring and expanding vocabulary relevant to specific areas of knowledge.
  • Developing language knowledge (mother tongue and other languages).
  • Expanding and deepening general knowledge and acquiring an appropriate level of intercultural awareness.
  • Perfecting listening skills and comprehension as well as oral expression in different communicative positions while placing emphasis on the multi-faceted nature of language and style.
  • Performance training.
  • Developing skills for consecutive interpretation in the context of technical and political meetings or conferences. 

Content (Syllabus outline)

Basic consecutive interpreting skills. Memory exercises, summarizing and recapitulation (SL-SL, C-A). Developing the ability to synthesize. Exercises in presentation, delivering thematic speeches. Introduction to note-taking. An incremental approach to consecutive interpreting, increasing speech length and density. Developing confidence for public performance.

Oral (interpreting) exam.
