Course Description

Objectives and competences

  • Acquiring, developing and expanding basic conference interpreting skills and knowledge.
  • Memory training for conference interpreting.
  • Developing the capacity to summarise and synthesize.
  • Learning approaches to acquiring and expanding vocabulary relevant to specific areas of knowledge.
  • Developing language knowledge (mother tongue and other languages).
  • Expanding and deepening general knowledge and acquiring an appropriate level of intercultural awareness.
  • Perfecting listening skills and comprehension as well as oral expression in different communicative positions while placing emphasis on the multi-faceted nature of language and style.
  • Performance training.
  • Developing skills for simultaneous interpretation in the context of technical and political meetings or conferences. 

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course consists of two units:

a) Simultaneous Interpreting B-A

b) Simultaneous Interpreting A-B.

Basic simultaneous interpreting skills – memory capacity, speech/listening comprehension, understanding structure, the speaker's aims and the context of discourse involving speaking participants, summarising and reformulation. Introduction to simultaneous interpreting: »shadowing« (in all language combinations), repeating by paraphrasing or content reformulation. Simultaneous interpretation of gradually and increasingly longer and denser speech units (up to 7-10 minutes) from C languages to Slovene. Acquiring public performance (»booth«) skills.

Prerequisits

Enrolment in the second year of Interpreting (MA).

Assessment

Oral (interpreting) exam. The exam consists of two units:

a) Simultaneous interpreting B-A: oral interpreting exam

b) Simultaneous interpreting A-B: oral interpreting exam.
