MODULE: Translation Seminar I: Translation from German into Slovene

Course Description

Objectives and competences

  1. 1. the ability to translate and understand German  and Slovene texts;
  2. 2. development of cultural and language competences for German and Slovene;
  3. 3. development of technical and professional competences in translating literary and non literary texts;
  4. 4. the ability to use computer and other technical aids useful in the profession;
  5. 5. the ability to choose terminological sources and to use computer aids for storing of terminology and building terminological databases;
  6. 6. the ability to compose texts in accordance with specific conventions of German or Slovene;
  7. 7. the ability to apply the methodology for solving translation problems related to different types of texts.

Content (Syllabus outline)

  1. Students choose 2 seminars from the selection below. The seminars that are part of the module are the following:  
  3. 1. Translation into Slovene: General texts I
  4. 2. Translation of texts for the arts and humanities I
  5. 3. Translation of literary texts I
  6. 4. Translation of legal texts I
  7. 5. Translation of political texts I
  9. A detailed description of the contents of single seminars forming the module are given in separate descriptions of these seminars.     


The basic literature for each seminars is stated separetely in the descriptions of the seminars that form the module.

Students are expected to have access to various mono and bi-lingual dictionaries in electronic or paper form. Obligatory:

  1. Optional: different specialised dictionaries, thesauri, dictionaries of synonyms, pictorial dictionaries, different encyclopaedias, terminological dictionaries, German-English, German-French, German-Italian, German-Spanish bilingual dictionaries.


  1. Enrollment in the first year of the MA programme in Translation/Interpreting.


The final grade is composed of two positive grades for each of the seminars (50% + 50%).

In individual seminars, the final grade consists of two parts:

  1. - students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or in class as tests (40% of the final grade);
  2. - the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination.
