Course Description

Objectives and competences

  1. - the ability to translate and understand Italian and Slovene texts;
  2. - development of cultural and language competences for Italian and Slovene;
  3. -   development of technical and professional competences in translating non literary texts;
  4. -   the ability to use computer and other technical aids useful in the profession;
  5. -   the ability to choose terminological sources and to use computer aids for storing of terminology and building terminological databases;
  6. -   the ability to compose texts in accordance with specific conventions of Italian or Slovene;
  7. -    the ability to apply the methodology for solving translation problems related to different types of texts.

Students take the following two seminars:

  1. 1.   Translation of economic and legal texts I
  2. 2.   Translation of culturally specific and professional texts I

Readings

The basic literature for each seminar is stated separately in the descriptions of the seminars that form the module.

Students are expected to have access to mono- and bi-lingual dictionaries in electronic or paper form. Obligatory:

Also recommended: various specialized dictionaries and other sources, dictionaries of synonyms, picture dictionaries, encyclopaedias, terminology dictionaries and glossaries, bi-lingual dictionaries with other language combinations. 

Prerequisites

  1. Registration in the first year of the MA programme in Translation/Interpreting.
