Course Description

General information

Aims

The aims of the course are to:

  • provide an overview of the history of translation theory and the development of theoretical thinking about translation;
  • familiarise students with critical reading of theoretical texts;
  • help students formulate their own theoretical approach to translation and the task and role of translator;
  • help students develop the ability to theoretically “think” translation and interpreting.

Content

The focus will be on:

  • the field of translation theory and its terminology;
  • the history of the theory of translation (Cicero, St Jerome, Martin Luther, Friedrich Schleiermacher);
  • the ontology and the theory of translation (Walter Benjamin, Roman Jakobson, Jacques Derrida);
  • the society and the theory of translation (Eugene Nida, Lawrence Venuti).

Links with other subjects

The course Theory of Translation is connected with the course Descriptive Translation Studies.

Student obligations

Students are expected to become actively involved in the discussion of issues arising from the texts treated. Exam.
