Course Description

General information

The aims of the course are to:

  • provide an overview of the history of translation theory and the development of theoretical thinking about translation;
  • familiarise students with critical reading of theoretical texts;
  • help students formulate their own theoretical approach to translation and the task and role of translator;
  • help students develop the ability to theoretically “think” translation and interpreting.

The focus will be on:

  • the field of translation theory and its terminology;
  • the history of the theory of translation (Cicero, St Jerome, Martin Luther, Friedrich Schleiermacher);
  • the ontology and the theory of translation (Walter Benjamin, Roman Jakobson, Jacques Derrida);
  • the society and the theory of translation (Eugene Nida, Lawrence Venuti).
