Course Description

Objectives and competences

  1. -   acquisition of different translation strategies for translating English and Slovene political texts;
  2. -   acquisition of cultural and language competences for English and Slovene and for the English and Slovene cultures;
  3. -   practice in the translation of political texts;
  4. -   the ability to analyse and comment on different political texts;
  5. -   the ability to use of different translation tools;
  6. -   the ability to revise and form political texts in accordance with the conventions in English and Slovene;
  7. -   the ability to work independently or in a team and to behave in accordance with the professional ethics
  8. -   acquisition of methodological framework for  solving problems connected with translation of political texts.     

Content (Syllabus outline)

The focus of the course will be on:

  1. -     the use of different strategies in translating political texts into and from English;
  2. -     the rhetorical conventions of and cultural differences between political texts in Slovene and English;
  3. -     the difference between author-centred and reader-centred formation of texts in Slovene and English;
  4. -     the analysis of the selected political texts 


  1. Students are expected to have access to various mono and bi-lingual dictionaries in electronic or paper form.

  1. Registration in the first year of the MA programme in Translation.


  1. Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or in class as tests (40% of the final grade); the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination.
