Course Description

Objectives and competences

  • An ability to understand and translate English and Slovene business and political texts;
  • To develop cultural and language competences for English and Slovene;
  • To develop technical and professional competences relating to the translation of English and Slovene business and political texts;
  • Ability to describe and theoretically analyse translation processes, for both teaching and research purposes;
  • Ability to use computer based solutions relevant to the translation profession;
  • Ability to edit and form business and political texts in line with English text conventions;
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly;
  • Acquiring the methodological basics for solving problems that arise in translating business and political texts into English.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Mastering theoretical and practical knowledge in relation to different genre and text conventions in Slovene and English business and political texts. Looking for translation solutions in different secondary literature (dictionaries, lexicons, handbooks, parallel texts) and with appropriate institutions and experts. Forming documentation. Critically evaluating different translation solutions. The rhetorical conventions of promotional texts, company websites, job advertisements, CVs, political speeches, political letters

Analysis of these kinds of texts.

Contrastive analysis of genres.

Comparing different translation strategies.

Writing translation commentaries (seminar paper).


The course is based on material prepared by the lecturer.

Single volume monolingual English dictionary (approx. 170 000 entries), students can choose between major British and American publishers: Collins Publishers, Oxford University Press, Longman Group, Chambers, Merriam-Webster, Random House itd.
Specialised dictionaries and other aids are also recommended: for example, a dictionary of false friends, a thesaurus, a dictionaries of synonyms, a picture dictionary and different encyclopaedias, terminological dictionaries and bilingual dictionaries.


Registration in the second year of the MA programme in Translation.


Coursework (50%) and written examination (50%).
