Course Description

Objectives and competences

  1. 1. To develop the ability to understand and translate literary texts in Slovene and German;
  2. 2. To develop cultural and language competences for German and Slovene;
  3. 3. To develop technical and professional competences for translation;
  4. 4. To develop students’ ability to analyse and comment on different texts which they can use in training or as practising translators:
  5. 5. To develop competences for the use of electronic and technical translation tools;
  6. 6. To develop students' competence for text formation and editing, complying with the norms and conventions of German and Slovene;
  7. 7. To develop the ability to work independently or in a team and to behave in accordance with the professional ethic on the national and international levels;
  8. 8. To develop different translation strategies for translating German literary texts into Slovene.


Content (Syllabus outline)

  1. The course will focus on the study of different literary genres, literary analysis and historical placing of texts; When translating poetry, the course will focus style and phonetic image of the poem; whereas translation of prose will focus on development of strategies for understanding of literary texts both Slovene and German, especially in cases of syntactic complexity and ambiguity, intertextuality, perspective changes, literary and cultural allusions, historical references, wordplay, and other stylistic features.

Students are expected to have access to various mono and bi-lingual dictionaries in electronic or paper form. Obligatory:

Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or at school as tests (40 % of the final grade); the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination.
