Course Description

Objectives and competences

  1. 1. To develop the ability to understand and translate political texts in Slovene and German;
  2. 2. To develop cultural and language competences for German and Slovene and for German and Slovene politics and society;
  3. 3. To develop technical and professional competences for translation;
  4. 4. To develop competencies for the use of electronic and technical translation tools;
  5. 5. To develop the ability to work independently and in a group;
  6. 6. To develop different translation strategies for solving problems in translating political texts from Slovene into German.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The focus of the course will be on:

  1. - Basics of the German political system at federal and state level.
  2. - Basic vocabulary from politics and administration.
  3. - Social and cultural differences between Germany and Slovena and their relevance in translation.
  4. - Discussion of texts, especially about: the Bundestag (German Federal Parliament), the Bundesrat (German Federal Council), federation and federal states, justice and administration, political system of Slovenia (National Assembly, National Council, government, etc.).
  5. - Translation of texts regarding the EU, its organisation and development.
  6. - Discussion of texts, especially about: Europan integration, Maastricht Treaty, Constitutional Treaty, Commission, Council, European Parliament.


Students are expected to have access to various mono and bi-lingual dictionaries in electronic or paper form. Obligatory:

Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or at school as tests (40 % of the final grade); the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination.
