Course Description

Objectives and competences

1. to develop different strategies for translating Italian and Slovene culturally specific texts;

2. to develop cultural and language competences for Italian and Slovene;

3. to provide practice in the translation of culturally specific texts;

4. to develop students’ ability to analyse and comment on different culturally specific texts;

5. to familiarise students with kinds of culturally specific texts that are frequently translated from and into Italian;

6. to develop the ability to understand Italian and Slovene texts, in particular where there is syntactic complexity, ambiguity, metaphorical meaning, analogy, cultural and historical references;

7. to develop the ability to compare culturally specific texts in Italian and Slovene to anticipate the norms and expectations of the target audience.

8.         to develop the ability to work independently or in a team and to behave in accordance with professional ethics.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The focus of the course will be on the analysis of existing translation and work with mostly culturally specific texts. Emphasis is put on the understanding of the source text both in Slovene and in Italian, especially with respect to syntactical, formal and cognitive complexity, on the role of intertextuality, on the conventions, characteristics and specific demands of culturally specific texts. Students learn to use different strategies in dealing with complex translation problems, both specific, text-bound ones and those characteristic of the systems. Apart from the basics of translating culturally specific texts, the students become aware of the variety of the field, of the expectiations, demands and norms of the target audience.


Students are expected to have access to mono- and bi-lingual dictionaries in electronic or paper form. Obligatory:

Also recommended: various specialized dictionaries and other sources, dictionaries of synonyms, picture dictionaries, encyclopaedias, terminology dictionaries and glossaries, bi-lingual dictionaries with other language combinations.


  1. Registration in the first year of the MA programme in Translation/Interpreting.


Type (examination, oral, coursework, project):

Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or in class as tests (40% of the final grade); the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination.

Forms of marking: 6-10 or A-E (positive grade), 1-5 or F (negative grade); the grade is positive if the average is at least 6.0. The assessment is in line with the Statute of the University of Ljubljana and the examination regulations of the Faculty of Arts.
