Course Description

Objectives and competences

  • to develop students’ ability to analyse a polysemiotic text;
  • to develop the ability to form subtitles following dialogue, video and speech rhythm;
  • to develop the ability to condense information and to master parameters governing the selection of condensation techniques;
  • to develop the ability to translate the language variety combining features of written and spoken language;
  • to develop the technical skills of subtitling, including the use of software and specific subtitling equipment;
  • to develop the ability to understand the parameters influencing the perception of subtitles;
  • to develop the ability of selecting the appropriate subtitling strategy dependent on the genre and the intended audience.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The seminar work consists of individual subtitling assignments with group analysis and evaluation.

Seminar topics

Part I:

Subtitling with literary sources; subtitling of non-English films and series via English as a relay language; subtitling without a script; difficult speech rate subtitling; subtitling of advanced non-fiction genres and talk shows.

Part II:

Subtitling of German, French or Italian films and series; subtitling of Slovene films and series in German, French or Italian; support-text writing to accompany the foreign-language subtitles  of Slovene films and series; surtitles in opera and other musical performances; captioning for the deaf, video description for the blind.

Prerequisits

Registration in the second year of the MA programme in Translation; examinations passed in Subtitling I and the restrictive electives in the translation module I: Subtitling: Films and Series and Subtitling: Non-Fiction Genres.
