Course Description

Objectives and competences

  • To develop the ability to translate and understand Slovene and German legal texts;
  • To develop cultural and language competences for German and Slovene and for the German and Slovene cultures and legal systems;
  • To develop technical and professional competences for translation of legal texts;
  • To develop students’ ability to analyse and comment on different texts which they can use in training or as practising translators:
  • To develop competences for the use of electronic and technical translation tools;
  • To develop students' competence for text formation and editing, complying with the norms and conventions of the German and Slovene languages;
  • To develop the ability to work independently or in a team and to behave in accordance with professional ethics at the national and international levels;
  • To develop different translation strategies for translating legal texts from German into Slovene. 

Content (Syllabus outline)

The basics of law of obligations; main features of contracts. Application of theoretical knowledge to translation practice: independent translation of different types of contracts, representation of court communication and general texts about law. Building of a glossary of legal terms met in translation practice.

Registration in the second year of the MA programme in Translation.


Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or in class as tests (50 % of the final grade); the remaining 50% of the grade is obtained in an examination.
