Course Description

Objectives and competences

  • to develop competences for the translation and understanding of Italian and Slovene literary texts and texts for the arts and humanities;
  • to develop cultural and language competences for Italian and Slovene;
  • to develop technical and professional competences in translating literary texts and texts for the arts and humanities;
  •  to develop students' descriptive and theoretical-analytical knowledge of translation processes which they can use for training and research purposes;
  • to provide practice in the use of computer and other technical aids useful in the profession;
  • to develop the ability to compose literary texts and texts for the arts and humanities in accordance with specific conventions of Italian or Slovene;
  • to develop the ability to work independently or in a team and to behave in accordance with professional ethics;
  • to familiarize the students with the methodology for solving translation problems related to literary texts and texts for the arts and humanities. 

Content (Syllabus outline)

The focus of the course will be on:
-           the use of different strategies in translating poetry and prose;
-           the role of intertextuality, narrative technique and point-of-view in prose translation;
-           proofreading, revision;
-           the conventions of translating texts for the arts and humanities into Slovene;
-           translation of literary texts into Italian (collaboration with an Italian-native speaker advisor).
-           the importance of target users' expectations and norms.

Prerequisits

Vpis v drugi letnik magistrskega študija prevajanja.

Assessment

Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or in class as tests (50 % of the final grade); examination (50%).
