Course Description

Objectives and competences

  1. 1.   Ability to translate and understand texts in English and Slovene with an emphasis on promotional texts;
  2. 2.   Advanced cultural and linguistic skills in English and Slovene;
  3. 3.   Advanced technical and professional skills in translating Slovene texts into English;
  4. 4.   Ability to describe and theoretically analyze translation processes that can be used in teaching and research;
  5. 5.   Computer skills and ability to use other technical tools useful for the profession;
  6. 6.   Skills for editing and creating general texts in line with specific English-language conventions;
  7. 7.   Ability to work completely independently and responsibly, work in groups, and capacity for work in line with professional ethics at the Slovene and international levels;
  8. 8.   Acquisition of methodological bases for solving problems that arise when translating promotional texts into English.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Various issues that often arise in the translation of promotional texts (e.g., tourism material, promotional material, promotional websites, etc.) are dealt with: translation of frequent word combinations, comparison of syntactic differences, comparative treatment of cohesive means in texts, translation of ambiguous word combinations or phrases, metaphorical meanings and idiomatic expressions, comparison of register differences and degrees of formality and the treatment of cultural differences between Slovenia and English-speaking countries.


Students are expected to have access to various mono and bi-lingual dictionaries in electronic or paper form. Obligatory:

Enozvezkovni enojezični angleški slovar (približno 170.000 gesel) večje britanske ali ameriške založbe, npr.:/A desk monolingual English dictionary (approx. 170 000 entries) of the major British or American publishers, e.g. Collins Publishers, Oxford University Press, Longman Group, Chambers, Merriam-Webster, Random House etc.

Optional: different specialised dictionaries, e.g. a dictionaries of false friends, Longman Language Activator, rhyming dictionaries, thesauri, dictionaries of synonyms, pictorial dictionaries, different encyclopaedias, terminological dictionaries, English-German, English-French, English-Italian, English-Spanish bilingual dictionaries.


Enrolment in the first  year of the study of Translation/Interpreting.


Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or at school as tests (40% of the final grade); the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination.
