Course Description

Objectives and competences

1. To develop the ability to understand and translate promotional texts in Slovene and German;
2. To develop cultural and language competences for German and Slovene, and for German and Slovene business and politics;
3. To develop technical and professional competences for translation;
4. To develop competencies to describe and theoretically analyse translation processes that could be used in training and practice;
5. To develop students' competence for text formation and editing, complying with the norms and conventions of German and Slovene;
6. To develop the ability to work independently or in a team and to behave in accordance with professional ethics;
7. To develop different translation strategies for solving problems when translating promotional texts in Slovene and German.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Translation of Slovene promotional texts into German. Production of glossaries and terminological databases. Solving translational problems and deepening of language competence. Contrastive analysis of selected text-types with regard to differences in composition, style, form, etc. Dealing with cultural differences between Slovenia and German language areas and the relevance of these differences for the translation of promotional texts.

Prerequisits

Enrolment in the second year of the study of Translation.

Assessment

Type (examination, oral, coursework, project):
Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or at school as tests (40% of the final grade); the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination.
 
Forms of marking: 6-10 or A-E (positive grade), 1-5 or F (negative grade). The assessment is in line with the Statute of the University of Ljubljana and the examination regulations of the Faculty of Arts.
