Course Description

Objectives and competences

1.         to develop strategies for understanding and translating English and Slovene contracts and business letters;
2.         to develop advanced cultural and language competences for English and Slovene;
3.         to develop advanced technical and professional competences in translation between English and Slovene;
4.         to develop the ability to describe and theoretically analyse the translation process, which can be used for didactic and research purposes;
5.         to develop the ability to use technical and computer-aided translation tools relevant to the translation profession;
6.         to develop the ability to edit and form contracts and business letters in line with English or Slovene text conventions;
7.         to develop the ability to work independently or in a team and to behave in accordance with professional ethics at national and international levels.
8.         to acquire problem-solving methods applicable to translation of contracts and business letters between English and Slovene.
 

Content (Syllabus outline)

Students apply their translation competence in business text translation between English and Slovene. They deepen their knowledge of terminology search in secondary resources (dictionaries, glossaries, specialist resource books, parallel texts) and with professional institutions and specialists. They make up their own resource materials. They provide critical assessment of translation options according to the skopos of the translated text.

Registration in the second year of the MA programme in Translation.

Assessment

Type (examination, oral, coursework, project):
The final grade consists of: coursework (40 %): continuous assessment of home assignments or translation tasks and tests; final examination (60 %).
