Course Description

 Objectives and competences:

1. To develop the ability to understand and translate literary texts in Slovene and German;
2. To develop cultural and language competences for German and Slovene, and for German and Slovene cultures and literatures;
3. To develop technical and professional competences for translation;
4. To develop students’ ability to analyse and comment on different literary texts which they can use in training or as practising translators:
5. To develop competences for use of electronic and technical translation tools;
6. To develop students' competence for text formation and editing, complying with the norms and conventions of the German and Slovene languages;
7. To develop the ability to work independently or in a team and to behave in accordance with professional ethics at the national and international levels;
8. To develop different translation strategies for translating German literary texts into Slovene.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course will focus on the study of different literary genres, literary analysis and historical placing of texts; translation of difficult texts, poetry as well as longer prose; following the latest developments in German and Slovene literatures; development of strategies for understanding of literary texts in German and Slovene, especially in cases of syntactic complexity and ambiguity, intertextuality, perspective changes, literary and cultural allusions, historical references, wordplay, and other stylistic features.


Students are expected to have access to various mono and bi-lingual dictionaries in electronic or paper form. Obligatory:

Enrolment in the second year of the study of translation.


Type (examination, oral, coursework, project):
Students are required to do translations and seminars for homework or at school as tests (40 % of the final grade); the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination.
Forms of marking: 6-10 or A-E (positive grade), 1-5 or F (negative grade). The assessment is in line with the Statute of the University of Ljubljana and the examination regulations of the Faculty of Arts.
